So if a ritual failed it will consume a very large vicinity as compensation like what happened to Kakeru's hometown but if it succeeded then nothing will happen aside from the life of the shrine maiden as payment like what the predecessors accomplished. Closing the gate requires something to power it up and that is the life of the Shrine Maiden.
Oka lost her mama then Ryo lost his papa. Oka from the main family while Ryo from the branch family. Their family sure got terrible luck with onis.

idk why i think this but that face with lack of animation to be suggesting sincere emotion just seems like she's faking being nice super hard and is actually a spy for some super-antagonist who's some super-aware and smart shinja (probably given a new name/classifcation, like a really humanistic shinja who is a lot easier to blend in with humans and is super aware of their surroundings)
